Test Site Technical Tour
WHAT: Las Vegas
YMF Technical Tour of the Nevada Test Site
The tour consists of stops at many historic and interesting places, such
as: Frenchman Flats, Control Point 1, Sedan Crater, Apple House, and a
model tour of underground testing site U1g. If you are interested,
please fill out the Department
Of Energy (DOE) badging form and send back to Jason Blair (Jblair@harris-assoc.com)
as soon as possible. We must have a head-count, and start the badging
process well in advance of the actual tour. Unfortunately, due to
DOE and national security restrictions, ONLY US CITIZENS will be allowed
to attend the tour. DOE sends its apologies, but this is how it
must be to protect national security and allow the tour.
WHERE: Meet at the Atomic Testing Museum (info below) and take a
van/bus to and from the Nevada Test Site.
WHEN: Monday, May 8, 2006 -- Meet at 6:45 AM at the
Atomic Testing Museum, and return at approximately 3:30 PM.

Las Vegas Technical Tour
Mr. Dan Rainey, the Vice President of Development for the Lake Las Vegas
Resort (also a licensed civil engineer), is offering a "behind the
scenes" tour of some of Lake Las Vegas' civil engineering facilities
from 2:00 to 4:00 PM on Friday, March 31, 2006.
The tour may include:
- Water pumping/lift station(s)
- Wastewater pumping/lift station(s)
- Raw water system (receive raw water from BMI and mix with potable for
landscaping use)
- Water reservoir(s)
- Dam and spillway
- Trash racks (trash screening system) for the culverts under the lake
- Drive through existing neighborhoods, and 4x4 through proposed expansion
areas
Confirmed attendees: Please meet at Mr. Rainey's office, located
at 29 Grand Mediterra Blvd., Henderson 89011-2801 (head east on Lake Mead
Parkway, take a left on Lake Las Vegas Parkway, right on Grand Mediterra
(first right), and take a right before you get to the South Shore guard
gate--you'll head up a little hill to a parking lot). It is the

Future Cities Competition
The Las Vegas Regional Competition of the National Engineer's Week Future
City Competition will be on Saturday, January 28, 2006, at Sierra Vista
High School. 7th and 8th grade students design a city of the future
using Sim City 3000, write an essay and abstract on a related topic, build
a scale model of a portion of their city, and finally give a full presentation
along with their model at the competition. The students learn about
engineering, city planning, infrastructure, zoning, taxes, project management,
scheduling, scaling, etc. The winning team from the Las Vegas Regional
Competition will go on to Washington, DC to compete in the National Competition
during Engineer's Week in February. This year we are expecting 40
teams at the regional competition -- that's incredible!
Volunteers and Judges for the following categories are needed:
- Event Staff (the day of
the competition)
- Sim City Computer Model
Judging (this can be done from your home/office)
- Essay Judging (this can
be done from your home/office)
- Physical Model Judging (this
is done at the event)
- Presentation Model Judging
(this is done at the event)
